Freshman sensation helps turn program around

As a five time all-state honoree, a four time team MVP, and Louisiana's Gatorade State Player of the Year, freshman Katherine Broussard has accomplished a lot in her nine year volleyball career but as she begins her collegiate journey she only has one goal in mind, winning the MEAC Championships. After last year's last place conference finish, the lady Bison currently sit on top of the MEAC standings with a 8-4 record and are undefeated in the conference. Broussard has been a huge part of this success. She has posted eight double-doubles on the season, and has been named the MEAC's Player of the Week and Rookie of the Week in back to back weeks. "I just try to do my best and stay as consistent as I can," Broussard said. "It's worked well so far." The starting outside hitter from New Orleans was introduced to the sport at age nine. From childhood it was clear that she was a strong athlete as she excelled in both softball and basketball; bu...

BOSCO Drops 'Greenlight' Music Video

It's been over 12 years since BOSCO released her very first project as a student at the Savannah College of Art & Design . Now, the new mother and record label owner has delivered her second project under her very own, Slug Records , which she launched last year. ' Car Therapy - EP ' comes just a few months after the release of her visual album, ' Some Day This Will All Make Sense ,' one of the stand-out projects of 2020. The Atlanta native solidifies her spot as one of the most skilled creatives in the game with the release of her latest visual, ‘ Greenlight ’ , from the Car Therapy - EP . The single itself is smooth & sultry, and the video only elevates it. The beautiful BOSCO personifies serenity as she performs amidst a collection of BMWs. “ Greenlight was inspired by my love for vintage BMWs. I wanted to tell a story through ‘car choreography’ and how much of your life happened inside of a car,” says BOSCO. This beautiful piece was directed by Pr...

Protestors stage sit in outside of Mayor's office

About 50 Atlanta citizens staged a sit-in outside Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms’ office on Monday demanding that she do something about the city's affordable housing crisis. Atlanta's population is rapidly increasing and so is the demand for housing, which has caused rent prices to sour. Unfortunately, Atlanta's average wages aren't rising nearly as quickly as the cost of rent, which is creating a huge gap between what people can afford and what people are making.  Home prices have more than doubled in the past three years in several south Atlanta neighborhoods, and as surrounding properties and neighborhoods are being revitalized, rent is rising and so are property taxes, making it impossible for some families to stay in their neighborhoods. Another point of contention for the protestors is the city's decision to buy back several homeowners' properties in the Peoplestown neighborhood in order to fix the area's flooding problems. Seven years ago, the city ord...

Greenbriar Mall looking to rebrand after Macy's closing

Greenbriar Mall   is arguably the most historic shopping mall in Atlanta. Not only is it the site of the first ever   Chick-fil-a , but it's also the first mall to introduce the modern food court. However, unfortunately, the mall has taken a couple of big hits recently. One of its anchor stores,   Burlington Coat Factory   moved to Camp Creek Marketplace two years ago, and its other anchor store,   Macy's , announced its closing due to the pandemic last month. Without its two largest department stores, the future of the mall is up in the air. On Tuesday, Councilwoman  Marci Collier Overstreet  held a virtual public meeting to discuss the mall's future. Overstreet stressed that the mall is still profitable, but says the owners are looking to rebrand and repurpose the 90-acre property. During the meeting, multiple ideas were thrown out there for the redesign, including, a MARTA transit hub, a new medical space, and an art center. Invest Atlanta , who hav...

Muguruza survives three-set scare in first round of Roland Garros

World №19 Garbine Muguruza and world No. 98 Taylor Townsend made history today playing the first official match ever on Roland Garros’ brand new Simonne-Matthieu Stadium Court. They definitely broke it in nicely with a 1 hour 59 minute match that went the distance. The 23 year-old American fought hard but in the end, it was the power and experience of the two-time grand slam champion that proved to be the difference in the match. Both players got off to a strong start, remaining on serve for the first five games of the match. It was clear from the start that this match would be a test for Muguruza. The first hiccup of the match came at Muguruza serving 2–3 down in the first set. The former world No. 1 threw in a double fault and butchered an easy backhand on top of the net, handing Townsend the first break of the match. Unfortunately for Townsend, she wasn’t able to take advantage, as Muguruza was able to clean up the errors and produce a couple of winners to immediately b...

Osaka avenges Miami loss in Germany

World No. 1 Naomi Osaka didn’t have to wait very long to avenge her loss to Su-Wei Hsieh, and I’m sure the WTA’s newest superstar was happy about it. Hsieh, the crafty veteran from the Chinese Tapei, took Osaka out just a month ago in the third round of the Miami Open, and had the opportunity to do it again today, this time at the Porshe Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. However, back-to-back wins were not in the cards for Hsieh, as Osaka seemed to learn from the three set loss in Miami, and played a much cleaner match against the veteran in Stuttgart. Both Osaka and Hsieh decided to take a month off after Miami, so Stuttgart was both players return to tournament play and the kick off to their clay court seasons. Hsieh had an opportunity to get out to an early lead at 2–1 in the first set but squandered it, missing two routine second serve returns on break points. The disappointment of not breaking clearly lingered, as Hsieh was easily broken in the very next game thanks ...

Nadal survives tough opening round in Barcelona

It was a much different opening round clay court win than we’re use to seeing from world number two Rafael Nadal, but it was a win nonetheless. In his first match back following his shocking semi-final defeat against Fabio Fognini last week in Monte Carlo, many expected Nadal to bounce back and come out strong in Barcelona. However, it was a very shaky start for the 11-time Barcelona Open champion. Facing the Argentinean veteran Leonardo Mayer, Nadal seemed unsettled from the beginning, littering the stat sheet with errors and missing routine second serve returns. Despite this, Nadal was still able to break at 4–3 in the first set to go up 5–3, and it seemed as if the 17-time grand slam champion was well on his was to serving out the set. Unfortunately for Nadal, things wouldn’t be that simple as Mayer was able to break back immediately thanks to an atypical sloppy service game from the tennis icon. At 5–4, Nadal once again had a chance to close out the first set having a break po...

Venus Survives First Round in Miami

Sixty seconds into Venus Williams’ first round match against Dalila Jakupovic, and it looked as if this would be a match that the 25-year tour veteran wouldn’t even be finishing, never mind winning. Tossing in a 81 mph first serve to start things off, it was clear that Venus was incapacitated in some way, as she was completely unable to generate any power on her serve. But she never stopped fighting, and despite her debilitated serve and inability to get off the block to run down balls, Venus problem-solved her way to victory. Her opponent, ranked at just 91 in the world, seemed unsettled by Venus’ injury right from the start. Despite this, Jakupovic was still able to get off to an early 4–2 lead, taking advantage of Venus’ immobility by hitting drop shots and strong service returns to the corners. However, it was Venus who was able to rely on her decades of experience on the big stage to outlast Jakupovic, who was playing in her first main draw match at the WTA Premier Mandatory ...
