Men and women dominate in first home tennis match of the season

On Friday the Howard University men’s and women’s tennis teams took on the Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in a MEAC north bout. The contest, however, proved to be an easy one for both the men and women, as both teams swept their opponents in a 6-0 lopsided victory.
The match started and ended in very tough playing conditions, as players battled through heavy winds and light rain in Friday’s 2pm contest at the Banneker Tennis Complex. Despite the weather, both teams were able to clinch the match in a little over an hour, earning the men’s team their first victory of the season, and the women their fourth.
Both teams won the doubles point in decisive fashion, as neither of the two men’s and women’s doubles pairings dropped a game. The men’s team kept up their momentum going on to sweep the Hawks in singles play, and dropping just three games in the process. Myron Davis, Laguna Foster, Nico Sorrell recorded 6-0, 6-0 victories at the #1-#3 spots, while Devin Coakley recorded a 6-1, 6-2 victory at the #4 position.
The lady Bison went perfect on the day as Umarah Mughnee, Jessica Josiah, Brooke Hawthorne, Audra Bell, and Ama Osei were all victorious 6-0, 6-0 in singles play.
The lady Bison will be back in action on Saturday at the US Naval Academy, and both teams will be back at Banneker for a Sunday showdown against Wagner College at 11am.
